Framing refers to the way we present a situation so that our perspective is clearly understood.
We all tend to frame our point of view in a way that moves us closer to our intended outcome. There are three things we must keep in mind while framing.
First, our perspective is almost always biased. Neutrality is a particularly hard thing to achieve. Even when we are not saying something, we are communicating. When we choose to react to something and let another thing go by, our silence unwittingly communicates our stance.
Second, our perspective can differ wildly from the person we are framing the problem statement to.
Third, most of us are unclear about our intended outcome. When we argue on social media, what do we really want to accomplish? What’s our intended outcome? Do we want to change the other person’s mind or prove that we are particularly knowledgeable about the issue at hand or both? Or is it that we are arguing because we are bored and have nothing better to do?
